PAN, Performing Arts Network was formed in June of 1994 by a group of individual performing artists and performing arts organizations, creating partnerships to help further their artistic goals and reach into the community. A coalition of multi-cultural National and International professional artists of the highest caliber, PAN has the mission of facilitating, developing and promoting the performing arts as well as increasing access, involvement and relationships between performing artists and the community.
When the development of Lincoln Road and rising costs made space unavailable for artists, the long overdue need for a facility where all of the performing arts could be found under one roof became apparent. These artists worked to find a central location to house PAN and to recruit members in need of rehearsal and teaching space. In a short time, they gained the enthusiasm of the artistic community as well as the support of the City of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council, The Florida Dance Association, The Professional Actors Association of Florida, and the Arts and Business Council. PAN successfully lobbied the City of Miami Beach to donate the space at 555 17th Street, which they renovated and turned into studio, office, and performance space.
PAN currently boasts a membership of more than one hundred artists and organizations representing African, Haitian, Cuban, Spanish, Hispanic, Middle-Eastern, North American, and European cultures, thus reflecting the rich cultural diversity of Miami-Dade County. PAN provides space for resident and visiting artists to hold classes, workshops, rehearsals, Lecture/Demonstrations, and performances in all forms of Dance, Music, and Theatre. PAN also offers the use of office equipment and training, career advice, legal clinics, and other related services for artists. PAN has its own web site at www.panmiami.org for artists to promote themselves and for the public to easily access information about upcoming events, classes and workshops. In addition, PAN completed a series of "Cable-Tap" for Community Television called "PAN Performs", which highlights the artists and activities of PAN. Deco Drive, a nationally broadcast television program features some of our events, and Telemundo, International Spanish language television station, as well as the BBC covered our past seasons and have expressed interest in our upcoming seasons.
PAN's programming includes forty regularly scheduled classes seven days a week in all styles of Dance, Music, and Theatre for children and adults, beginners to professionals, including special programs for toddlers, young children, senior citizens and those with special needs. These classes serve to preserve and develop the varied cultural arts in our community. PAN In-Studio Performance Series gives artists the opportunity to interact with audiences and provide closer access to the creative process with Performances, Lecture/Demonstrations, Workshops and Master Classes. These are designed to educate the community to respect and appreciate other cultures through the various performing arts. PAN provides opportunities for the community to observe the finest professional companies in rehearsal as well as attend performances by some of the most cutting edge artists of our time. Special children's programs are designed to provide a positive outlet and environment promoting self-esteem and self-expression. PAN has completed several very successful Performing Arts Summer Camps for Children, educating children ages 2-13 in the various performing arts with professional artists. Through relationships with the City of Miami Beach Mayor's Committee on Children's Affairs, Easter Seals, The City of N. Miami, MOCA, and the Children's Cultural Coalition Cultural Encounters, PAN has produced outreach programs for at-risk youth.
In the Fall of 2001, PAN had the excellent opportunity to take part in the establishment of The World Arts Village, a new complex of three buildings, occupying an entire City Block in North Miami. We built a new performing arts facility at this new location to house the organization and its programs beginning in January 2002. With the assistance of a Capital Grant from Miami-Dade County, we turned three storefronts into rehearsal, classroom, performance and office space, as well as a Black Box Theatre to better suit our organizational needs and mission as part of The World Arts Village. We have consistently offered our high quality performing arts programs to this community and we plan to continue to develop our relationships and programs to reach more North Miami residents, while attracting visitors from throughout Florida as well as National and International artists and tourists.
